Galen Erso is a brilliant scientist and engineer within the Star Wars universe, primarily known for his role in the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), his first appearance.
Initially coerced into working for the Galactic Empire, Galen was tasked with weaponizing kyber crystals. Unbeknownst to the Empire, he secretly sabotaged the Death Star project by building a fatal flaw into its design: a vulnerable exhaust port leading directly to the reactor.
Haunted by his actions and determined to atone for his involvement, Galen covertly worked with the Rebel Alliance by sending a message hidden within an Imperial pilot, leading to the discovery of the Death Star's weakness. He ultimately dies during an Imperial attack on the research facility where he was working, sacrificing himself to ensure his message reached the Rebels.
